Bologna, Italy - Preliminary project for the expansion of the commercial spaces located in Galleria Cavour (in partnership with C&W) – 2011

Galleria Cavour in Bologna was created after the bombings of the war by crossing what was once the 16th-century palazzo of the Vassè Pietramellara family. After various vicissitudes, after World War II, the owners realised the potential of the gallery in the richest part of Bologna and favoured its transformation into a luxury centre. Today the gallery is included in the international list of High Streets and is the only one covered.
The project that was carried out, through the acquisition of the floor plans of all the buildings adjacent to and above the gallery, was an exploratory experiment to assess the potential for expansion of commercial activities also on the upper floors. Just understanding the levels and possible connections between different buildings, with different heights, took a long time, as did the positioning of vertical connections that could form a single communication to reach all the new spaces. The most interesting proposal envisages the creation of a transparent roof resting on the highest levels, a barycentric rising unit with a system of balconies/galleries facing the courtyard and connecting all the spaces.
