Rapallo (GE), Italy - Project and architectural works management for the renovation of a private attic - 2009

In a 1960s building, set a few hairpin bends above the Aurelia so as not to see or hear the road, the flat occupies two-thirds of the penthouse floor, with a 300 square metre terrace that, like the prow of a ship, extends the view towards the Punta di Portofino.
The large glazed sliding French windows look west over the gulf and the hills behind, extending the view, which thus embraces almost 180 degrees.
The flat is set back about 2 metres from the perimeter of the building, and the project had to “dialogue” with a relatively narrow body crossed by cavities and stairwells.
These limitations, instead of becoming annoying constraints, have made it possible to create particularly interesting and original atmospheres.
The terrace also has important technical volumes, and the design takes this into account, alternating irregularly split slate-covered cubes (for the extra lift shafts) and circular white plaster basins for the cavities (filled with lavender plants). All the flooring is made of Ipè wood. A 30 square metre brise-soleil extends the relaxation area, located in front of the dining area.
The alternation of these materials, inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, makes it possible to positively articulate the terrace, creating different zones for different functions.
The kitchen has a window-front worktop with a landscape that takes your breath away. The kitchen table in solid larch “crosses” the window frame to a corner of the terrace dedicated to breakfast and barbeque.
