Segrate, Milano, Italy - 3M Technical Customer Center. Complete project and management of construction work

The target given us by our client was that of being in a direct and every day stronger contact with their customers. To satisfy them, in a well organized area, a big companies’ exigency becomes more and more important, so it was important to show physically the efficacy of their products and realize specific applications on the customer products, organize presentations and training.
It was quite challenging: we had to realize real laboratories with special equipment, small ovens and hoods, a test dark-room for refracting products more than 15 meters long, dedicated demonstrative areas, storage-areas and, above all, we had to display products of very different kind.
We had to manage an extremely wide and heterogeneous range of products, considering their complexity, in order to suggest the client the wide range of possible solutions to all the most different problems. So, multicolor trams, optical fibers, electrical connectors, abrasive sponges, medical equipment, road signs, plasters for nose, traffic lights, TV projectors and many other things had to meet, functionally and tidily.
Space has been organized according to a very simple distributive pattern, based on the modular scheme of the building.
In order to go visually beyond the division into different departments and to show the public the wide range of products, the wall along the principal way has been made of glass, as well as the first transversal dividing elements between different areas. In this way, an effect of “tridimentional transparency” is provided.
Big photos, exposed on a particular film visible only on the more lit up side (3M “One Way”), distinguish the different departments, and the most significant products are displayed on surfaces fastened to the same structure.
Beyond these protections, every department has its own equipment.
According to a logic which means to create a visual protection the more you move from the principal way the more there is space for demonstrations and training first, then, protected by low panels, tables for experimenting, applying and verifying the products.
From the architectural point of view our target was to create and conjugate high technical atmosphere of an experimental laboratory together with the elegance of a customer show room.
The customers get the feeling of taking part to the birth of a specific product application studied on their needs. Materials, equipment and colors are absolutely those used in real laboratories. The furniture has been carefully planned in order to satisfy all the different technical exigencies of departments.
