Milan, Italy - Project and architectural works management for Allstate Insurance new offices - 2000

The initial project of 1998 had the main objective to guarantee the start-up of the Company, intervention that was limited to the construction of five of the eight floors of the building (500 square meters per floor) and the two service basements. Already in the first year of life, the rapid growth of the company made a revision of the operating spaces indispensable, the renovation and construction of two new floors and the planning of the distribution development of the whole building for the immediate future.
Always in contact with the engineering department of Chicago, the Firm has taken on the following objectives:
1. Making the new plans and the Call Center homogeneous to the general image of the Company by characterizing the Allstate environment and work philosophy.
2. Optimize the use of spaces in the direction of a more rational and modular use.
3. Create a “new measure of Call Center” offering a comfortable and relaxing working environment, which allows operators to maintain high performance even after several hours.
The space planning of the Call Center plans provides for the delimitation of a central space with respect to the plan, which includes the main routes and all the support services for the activity.
This delimitation has allowed the creation of operating open spaces of an absolutely regular and modular shape located along the windowed walls.
The constraint to be overcome consisted of a series of small technical volumes containing the shafts and vertical uprights of the systems (e.g. electrical, data, telephony, air conditioning, heating, control units) that complicated the paths and prevented a rational use of space. The solution was to group these servants into a single element with the smallest and least binding form possible by translating the obstacle into an ordering architectural element with an oval plan.
The overall space was designed to obtain an optimal ratio between the number of operators, the surface area occupied and environmental comfort.
For individual comfort, workstations have been created with ergonomic features suitable for specific use, with easy access to the systems, vertical shielding that guarantee confidentiality and territorial definition.
