The old convent of S.Bartolomeo, located in the historical centre of Genoa, is reborn after years of neglect with residential and tertiary use, under the careful guidance of the Soprintendenza
The flat we are renovating is located under the double-pitched roof in the north-west corner of the complex, on two levels that follow the “mount” of the vaulting below.
It is a difficult volume to organise in which the functions must also take into account an heterogeneous lighting: windows and French windows in the lower part, hoods and skylights in the upper part. The project resolves these constraints by seeking a proportion with a clear separation between night and day areas and creating functional spaces in the latter, which are clearly defined by precise routes: a small separate entrance, an open kitchen, a dining area, a living room. A rectilinear staircase leads down to the study in the lower area. All functions live in the same space without disturbing each other thanks to the articulation of volumes that help perceive them as separate.
