In the district of S. Ilario, one hundred metres from the sea, in a semi-detached building in rationalist style, the renovation work involved the upper floor flat (approx. 110 square metres), the staircase to reach it, and the flat roof terrace.
In this job, the client’s requirements were quite precise as to what should be there: a master room, two guest rooms, a small kitchen, two bathrooms and a living room with dining area. To these requirements were then added several storage rooms, an anteroom for the sleeping area and a small bathroom for the terrace.
The internal distribution is inevitably articulated, but the use of boiseries and soft colours, as well as designed furniture, has made the logic of spaces and volumes clearly perceptible, contributing to making the flat very liveable and its relative complexity a precious feature.
A peculiarity: in Liguria, even these relatively recent houses were built with the remnants of slate, a material here much cheaper than brick. With this in mind, the staircase leading to the flat was clad on the perimeter wall with slate strips. The railings of the staircase (in very poor condition and of no value) were replaced by a low masonry balustrade and wooden handrail spaced by thin satin-finish steel tubes, echoing a motif of the period.
