Bernate Ticino (MI), Italy - Project of renovation of Mulino Annoni (with the architect Lamberto Agostini) - 2013

A beautiful brick mill near Bernate, in the middle of the Ticino Park, is lucky enough to be “discovered” by two families who decide to make it their “escape from Milan”. Even though it seems impossible, a wood next to an irrigation ditch and surrounded by cultivated fields can be found 20 minutes from the city.
The renovation is a work of faith and tenacity. The criterion adopted was to clearly show the contemporary nature of the interior in both the cut and the materials, and to keep the exterior intact.
The Superintendency, the Ticino Park, the Region, the Municipality and the Asl are the bodies that authorised the interventions. It was interesting to see how valuable building heritage is “protected”, but one has to wonder what would have become of this building if it had been left to its own due to authorisation complexities.
The external restoration is meticulous in protecting the pre-existing buildings and the changes that have taken place over time. Four windows are re-opened, all doors and windows are changed, the roof re-made and the façade cleaned.
All the land on the property has been reclaimed.
Internally an insulating coat is created, there are no original traces and spaces are cut to meet new requirements: a new staircase connects the two floors and the south wing is made independent to house the caretaker.
